Weekend Dominance
Liberty University's Women's Division 1 Hockey team demonstrated their dominance this past weekend, securing a convincing two-game series victory against Lindenwood University at the LaHaye Ice Center. The Lady Flames showcased exceptional teamwork, skill, and determination throughout both contests.
"This was a statement weekend for our program," said head coach Sarah Johnson. "We've been working hard to improve our consistency, and I'm proud of how the team executed our game plan against a tough Lindenwood opponent."
Game 1: Strong Start
The Lady Flames came out firing in the first game, taking control early with a goal from senior forward Emily Thompson just 4:32 into the first period. Junior defenseman Megan Davis added to the lead with a powerful slap shot from the point late in the second period, assisted by Thompson and freshman forward Jessica Chen.
Junior goaltender Amanda Wilson was a force in net, making 24 saves to secure the shutout victory. The defensive unit played exceptionally well, limiting Lindenwood to just a few quality scoring chances.
"Our defense was rock solid tonight," Johnson noted. "We blocked shots, won battles along the boards, and transitioned quickly to offense. It was a complete team effort."
Game 2: Finishing Strong
Not resting on their laurels, the Lady Flames came out equally determined in the second game of the series. After a scoreless first period, sophomore forward Rachel Martinez broke the deadlock with a beautiful wrist shot early in the second period.
Lindenwood fought back and tied the game midway through the third period, but Liberty responded quickly with Chen notching the game-winner just 2:17 later. Senior captain Taylor Smith added an insurance goal with under two minutes remaining to seal the 3-1 victory.
"I'm especially proud of how we responded after they tied it up," said Smith. "We didn't panic; we stayed focused on our game plan and found a way to win. That's the mark of a mature team."
Standout Performers
Several players had exceptional weekends for the Lady Flames. Thompson led the offense with a goal and two assists across the two games, while Davis anchored the blue line with her strong defensive play and offensive contributions.
Wilson continued her impressive season in net, posting a 0.50 goals-against average and a .979 save percentage over the weekend. Her performance earned her Atlantic Hockey Conference Goaltender of the Week honors.
"Amanda has been outstanding all season," Johnson praised. "She gives us confidence every time she's in net, and her consistency has been a key factor in our success."
Team Chemistry
What makes this year's Lady Flames team special, according to players and coaches, is their exceptional chemistry and unity. With just five seniors on the roster, the team has developed a strong bond that translates to their performance on the ice.
"We've become like a family," Chen said. "We support each other on and off the ice, and that trust is crucial during games. When things get tough, we know we can rely on our teammates."
Looking Ahead
With the weekend sweep, the Lady Flames improve to 8-3 on the season and 4-0 in conference play. They currently sit atop the Atlantic Hockey Conference standings and are gaining recognition nationally.
Next weekend, Liberty will face their biggest test of the season when they travel to take on defending conference champion Boston University in a two-game series. The team is already preparing for the challenge.
"Boston University is a top-tier program," Johnson acknowledged. "But we believe in our abilities, and if we continue to play the way we have been, we can compete with anyone in the country."
Community Support
The Lady Flames have enjoyed tremendous support from the Liberty community this season, with attendance at home games increasing by nearly 30% compared to last year. The student section, known as "The Frost Zone," has been particularly energetic.
"Our fans have been incredible," Smith said. "Their support gives us an extra boost during games, and we're grateful for their dedication to our program."
